Vestibular Migraines

Written By Full Life Chiropractic on December 22, 2022

All migraines are difficult to manage. They stop you in your tracks and make it difficult to function. Light and noises become irritating and little can help. Sometime medications are used to ease the onset of a migraine, but vestibular migraines are different.

When symptoms of migraines are accompanied by loss of balance, unsteadiness with motion, and ringing in the ears a vestibular assessment may be warranted.

People diagnosed with vestibular migraines typically go through a series of medical tests and appointments to get diagnosed. They will go through bouts of dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance. They will see ENT’s, MD’s, neurologists, and even get CT scans and MRI’s, which none verify any pathology.

It is typically the vertigo and any hearing symptoms that will lead your doctor to diagnosing vestibular migraines. The combination of tinnitus (ringing in the ears), or Meniere’s Disease can be there as well.

Patients are left helpless with little treatments available. Medications may not work and come with side-effects, and other options such as burning nerves in the ear to ease symptoms seem drastic.

Suffers will start to research and eventually come across upper cervical chiropractic. This is where they learn that the upper neck and brain stem could be the culprit to their migraines.

At our office we use X-ray and cone beam CT imaging to access the alignment of the upper neck. Any misalignments in this area could be the reason for nerve irritation and these type of migraine symptoms. Along with our spinal thermography we can match irritation of nerves (through heat patterns) along with the radiographic findings and bingo! Upper cervical subluxation is diagnosed.

Correcting the subluxation with a specific Blair adjustment can resolve these symptoms within days to weeks. Patients are usually left in disbelief and grateful, but always wonder why they were not referred here earlier. We wonder the same thing sometimes, and encourage you to share this information with others who may need the help.
